As the developer Masa stakes claim on this part of town, properties are larger so generally offer better value for money in terms of size. It was an average Tuesday morning, trying to find a parking space on a market day was proving to be more challenging than I thought it would be. Coffee was a ritual performed daily, once again I stood in line listening to a multitude of different languages waiting for my reward. As I was handed my first coffee of the day, life seemed to be more than balanced once again. As pleasantries were exchanged, I managed to find a seat and sipped my coffee whilst browsing a local newspaper. There was no rush to open up the office as I had cleaned up and prepared for my morning meeting the previous day. I used to interview people when I worked as a recruitment consultant in London albeit for employment purposes, but the principle is often the same. Street art has become one of the many reasons to visit Los Alcázares with tourists taking photos on a daily basis. Residents have started to catalogue them and there are countless places to find them online. I just wanted to thank everyone for the support you have shown for my blog. Approaching 2,000 reads and countless emails about the area, schools and healthcare it's nice to know that I have an audience. Many of you probably don't know but I write in my spare time, articles and educational books but in 2011 I published my first children's novel. Walking is a pastime here, why not it was voted by the world health council as having one of the best climates worldwide. Often this timeless place we call home boasts change but the beach remains relatively untouched. Rain or shine, there is a certain charm that is always inviting and provides much of the draw to this area. The beach has undergone some modernisation and one of the most recent changes caught my eye this morning. For better or for worse the pier at San Antonio has been extended and I think that from the tourist boat's perspective it's for the better. This particular scene has been symbolic to all the weddings, scattering of ashes, street parties, food festivals and tourists. If you are looking for something very close to the beach and a stones throw from the Los Alcázares marina then this Hotel will tick all the boxes. Wonderful service and family run it is located opposite the old town hall. As you enter, to the right is a bar area to your left is the dining room and it's set back literally on the beach. Taxis can be booked from reception and just so that you have your bearings, the exact location is indicated on this post. If you have friends visiting or you need somewhere which is has more charm than a new build, this is a place of interest and should be checked out. There is always someone available to speak English at reception and during high season there are plenty of beach bars and night markets a stones throw from the Hotel. A Different Perspective High season starts officially this weekend and on Saturday night you will see tailbacks all along the motorway exit into Los Alcázares. If your looking to have a very different perspective of the Mar Menor then the "Ferry service" as it's known in these parts is available from the pier at San Antonio. The Ferry takes the route to the widest birth on the Mar Menor so the view point is very special as you will see the many scattered islands and of course the famous La Manga port. (Tomás Maestre) The service starts from the 15th of June, and runs Monday's, Wednesday's, Friday's and Sunday's. Departure times are 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 5pm and 7pm. A one way ticket will set you back €5 and you can buy ticket on board. The Port Of Cartagena If you are looking for a place to visit which offers a combination of Spanish architecture, local cuisine , history and culture then this place will tick all the boxes. Cruise ships continually change the dominating view of the Port and is testimony to the new and emerging economy that this town is experiencing. Once nothing more than a reference point in history, it now reminds me of Barcelona with an emerging economy, off plan developments and a growing tourism base that would leave most towns envious. It's not far from Los Alcázares in fact some 25 minutes drive time door to door. A taxi fare would be around 35 Euros each way but it's not too bad if you are travelling in numbers. As the road snakes round the Police station, you really are in shock and awe at Cartagena's beauty.
